Abstract
The authors critically reviewed the existing literature on the effect of culture on psycho-a pathology in the perspective of psychiatry and discussed in detail on the pathoplastic and pathogenic effects of cultural and social factors on the development of individual¢¥s dy specific psychopathology. Regarding the contents of delusions, patients project their inner conflicts unto the external objects according to cultural expectation or suggestion, of compromizing the inner need and the cultural, expectations. Cultural effects can in-pa- fluence from the beginning of the each patient¢¥s¢¥ symptom forming stage, it is vital that the cultural identity of each patient be assessed individually, and to understand the cultural identity of the patient, the clinician must understand the individual¢¥s cultural meaningsystems for the adequate diagnosis and proper treatment. Most of the Korean psychi atrist used the Western diagnostic system of the mental illness, clinicians could overlook 1 the cultural influences in the genesis of their patient¢¥s psychopathology. All clinicians should be aware of both their patient¢¥s cultural identity and their own subcultural backgrounds.
